Cover Poison: Starling, A Fractured Light, and Promised

Yep, you guessed it. More covers to reveal! First is a new series by Lesley Livingston.

"Love is just the beginning... of the end."

Mason Starling is a champion fencer for Gosforth Academy, but she’s never had to fight for her life. Until now. When a ferocious storm rips through Manhattan and unleashes terrifying creatures onto Gosforth’s campus, Mason barely escapes alive. Without help from the mysterious stranger who appeared in the midst of the storm, she might not have made it at all. But now, in the aftermath, Mason’s life begins to spin dramatically, mystically out of control, and the only one who seems able to help her is the stranger who can remember nothing but his name: Fennrys Wolf.

As Mason and Fenn uncover more about Fenn’s past and the strange events that surround them, they realize that Mason’s family — and its dark allegiance to the ancient Norse gods — is at the center of everything. A predetermined fate seems to be closing in on Mason, but is it possible to change one’s destiny?

Readers who fell in love with Lesley Livingston’s Wondrous Strange trilogy and those who love Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series will be captivated by the sweeping romance and pulse-pounding action of Starling.

My thoughts: Well to be honest, the premise makes me nervous because my book is based off of Norse mythology, but it's also completely different. This is definitely forcing me to get into gear though to start researching and querying agents soon! But I love the cover. I haven't read her other series, Wondrous Strange, yet but I love those covers too.

Next is the sequel to A Beautiful Dark.

When she wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings, Skye knows something terrible has happened to her. But it’s not until she hears Asher, the dark, rebellious angel she fell in love with, that the memories of Devin and his shocking betrayal come flooding back.

Skye returns home, but with the knowledge of who she really is, nothing can ever be the same. As she tests the limits of her newfound powers, Skye discovers that she’s capable of far more than anyone could have imagined. Both the Order and the Rebellion want her for their side as war between the factions looms. She can’t forgive the Order for nearly killing her, but something holds her back from embracing the Rebellion.

A Fractured Light picks up right after A Beautiful Dark‘s shocking cliffhanger ending and is perfect for fans of Lauren Kate’s Fallen and Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush saga.

My thoughts: I enjoyed the first book in this series, and that had an amazing cover as well! We were left on a crazy cliffhanger, so I'm really excited to see where this series is going. Here's that first cover:

Lastly is the cover for the final book in the Birthmarked series.

Gaia Stone has challenged the ruthless regime of the Enclave, she's crossed a terrible wasteland to live in Sylum and even adapted to their strange new ways. But now she faces her biggest challenge ever: leading the people of Sylum back to the Enclave in the hopes that they can find a way to peacefully co-exist. The Enclave has grown even more cruel in the time they've been away, and now Gaia has the added burden of feeling responsible for the safety of the former residents of Sylum as well as her own. Gaia's always been strong-minded, but is she willing to pay the price of being a leader? And what if what's at stake is her and Leon's future?

My thoughts: I love this cover! It's better than the first two by a long shot. To be honest, I hope this is the last book. While I like this series, it's certainly not my favorite dystopian and so I'm gunning for the final book and a satisfying ending. Here are the covers for the first two books:

Goddess Interrupted (Goddess Test #2) by Aimee Carter: review

Goodreads rating: 4.18
Paperback, 304 pages (ARC edition)
Expected publication: March 27th 2012 by HarlequinTeen

Kate Winters has won immortality.

But if she wants a life in the Underworld with Henry, she’ll have to fight for it.

Becoming immortal wasn’t supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she’s as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he’s becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate’s coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry’s first wife, Persephone.

5/5

To be honest, I thought The Goddess Test (the first in this series) was alright. My biggest issue with it was that I didn’t feel very connected to Kate. She almost seemed emotionless to me, and I didn’t actually like her as the heroine of the story until the very end. I liked the idea of the novel itself, but it was hard connecting with the main character. Luckily, Carter changed all that in Goddess Interrupted.

Despite the fact that Kate is basically queen of the Underworld now, she was more relatable than in the first one. Again, I felt so detached in the first one because the main character was so aloof. I understood her more, and her emotions were made very clear to the reader. If my crying through the last half of the book is any indication, then it’s obvious that Carter did something really right this time around.

My heart ached over Kate and Henry’s love life. Kate feels like she needs to give Henry space, as she was gone with James for 6 whole months, and who knows what kind of conclusion Henry came to. But Kate isn’t Persephone, who becomes a whole other issue and who honestly deserves a slap in the face. Kate needs Persephone’s help defeating a Titan which evil Calliope has released, but in the end, I think Persephone did more hurt than help.  Because we all know Henry is still in love with her. Or is he?

I also liked the action plot of this one more than the first. I felt like there was a whole lot of waiting for Kate to get to her test (which we all know how that turned out). In this one, it’s pretty much non-stop action. Carter set it up wonderfully for the next one. Although I will admit, I LOATHE her for that cliffhanger. That was not okay. I think I legitimately yelled at the book.

If you’ve read The Goddess Test, definitely continue the series. The second in the series greatly outshines the first, so don’t give up hope!

Cover/Synopsis Poison: Glass Heart, Ten, The Crown of Embers & Before I Wake

So many covers are being unveiled lately it's hard to keep up. By the time I put two or three of them in a published post, another pops up! Anywho, that's beside the point. First up is the cover for a sequel that I didn't even know existed.

EXPECTED PUBLICATION: October 2012

(NO SYNOPSIS AT THIS TIME)

My thoughts: While I didn't enjoy Cold Kiss as much as I thought I would, I can't deny that these covers are gorgeous. I did think it ended a bit abruptly so it's good to know that that wasn't the end. I'll probably read this one. Speaking of Cold Kiss, here's that cover.

Then is the next book by Gretchen McNeil (author of Possess):

PUBLICATION DATE: September 18th

And their doom comes swiftly.
It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives – an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school's most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message:
Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off the from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn't scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

My thoughts: I'm not really that into this cover. The cover for Possess was beautiful and creepy and awesome! This actually looks more like an adult book than a YA book. The premise looks awesome though, and Gretchen is great at writing creepy.

Next, the cover for the sequel to the amazing The Girl of Fire and Thorns:

Elisa is the hero of her country. She led her people to victory against a terrifying enemy, and now she is their queen. But she is only seventeen years old. Her rivals may have simply retreated, choosing stealth over battle. And no one within her court trusts her-except Hector, the commander of the royal guard, and her companions. As the country begins to crumble beneath her and her enemies emerge from the shadows, Elisa will take another journey. With a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with, Elisa crosses the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone’s power. That is not all she finds.

A breathtaking, romantic, and dangerous second volume in the Fire and Thorns trilogy.

My thoughts: I absolutely fell in love with the first book. But I actually really liked the original cover for the book, like this:

But in any case, they changed the covers and so now the second one fits really well with the first one. I hope Crown of Embers won't be nearly as heartbreaking as the first book. Here's the cover for that wonderful first book (definitely pick it up if you haven't already!!):

And finally is a different kind of reveal. There's a good reason why Rachel Vincent hasn't posted the synopsis for the next Soul Screamer's novel, Before I Wake. It must have been difficult to find the right words so that it wasn't totally spoilery. Here's what Rachel Vincent told us on her website:

Well. The internet beat me (and my publisher) to the punch. Again. These things happen. Repeatedly, apparently. So there’s no reason not to show you the (super spoilery) Before I Wake plot synopsis now:
[MAJOR SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't read If I Die, please do not read the blurb below. Reading spoilers out of context is NOT the same as reading the book itself, and you truly can't tell whether or not you're going to like a book just by reading spoilers.]

June 26, 2012
I died on a Thursday—killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul.
The good news? He didn’t get it.
The bad news?
Turns out not even death will get you out of high school…
Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much
harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent
“recovering,” she’s back in school, fighting to stay visible to the
human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning
time alone with her new reaper boyfriend.
But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim
stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face
with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal
status won’t keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn’t just gambling
with her own life….

On a personal note, let me say that Before I Wake is a book about consequences. There are lots of consequences in the Soul Screamers world, and they’re all permanent. Sometimes you may think that Kaylee’s catching a break, like what happened at the end of If I Die, but in the Netherworld, no good deed goes unpunished. Afterlives must be earned. Kaylee and her friends and family have been inevitably, irrevocably changed by what happened in If I Die.
If you haven’t already figured it out, My Soul To Take’s theme was vanity. My Soul To Save was greed, My Soul To Keep was gluttony (addiction), My Soul To Steal was envy, and If I Die was lust.
Before I Wake is the sloth-themed book. I’ve interpreted sloth as depression, but the book is really about fighting depression—almost literally in Kaylee’s case. It’s a book about change. About learning to live in your new reality. About accepting what you’ve lost and embracing what you’ve gained. Aside from that, the book is also kiss-heavy, and the most action- and trauma-filled Soul Screamers book to date.
If you’re familiar with (at least one interpretation of) the seven deadly sins, you’ll know what that leaves for the seventh and final book, and after you’ve read Before I Wake, you’ll understand why I left rage for last.
Oh, and one more thing. At least one major character will die in Before I Wake.
Make of that what you will… ;)

My thoughts: There's just so much in this one post, I can't even comprehend!! I didn't quite like the ending to If I Die (I totally understood Kaylee's choices, but I didn't like it one bit!), and to say that this is going to hurt my heart even more than If I Die... A heart can only take so much Rachel! Cannot wait for this to come out.

What do you guys think of the covers and synopsis? Love them? Hate them? Let me know in the comments!

Everneath (Everneath #1) by Brodi Ashton: review

Goodreads rating: 4.00
Hardcover, 370 pages
Published January 24th 2012 by Harper Collins / Balzer + Bray
Series: Everneath #1

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...

4.5/5

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It’s gotten a lot of mixed reviews and so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’ve always loved mythology, and even though Greek myths are sort of overdone (especially the Hades and Persephone myth), Everneath had a very unique and creative twist to it. Think about it: 6 months in the human world is 100 years in the Everneath. Already, I’m hooked.

This book had a lot to do with the romance. The only thing that helps Nikki hold onto her old life is remembering Jack’s name. Jack was Nikki’s boyfriend before something happened and she found herself in Everneath with Cole, who apparently is Hades. Except that he doesn’t rule the underworld; a queen does, and he’s trying to overthrow her. And somehow Becks (Nikki) fits snuggly into this situation. Cole has been looking for someone for so long that can survive the feeding intact, so he’s not about to let her go.

Let’s start by saying I did not like Cole. He was mean, sadistic, a bigot, and just a generally bad person. He may have had his moments where it was obvious he cared about Nikki, but he’s a selfish creature by nature and when it comes to anything besides Nikki, he’s not very compassionate. Jack, on the other hand, was amazing. I had read some reviews where people mentioned not liking either of the boys, and I was thinking that doesn’t seem right. Well, I love Jack. He’s patient with Nikki, who’s getting re-acclimated to the human world again (a world where people think she got addicted to hard-core drugs and that she went away for rehab). They didn’t exactly part on good terms, and so this is, yes a paranormal romance, but also a story of redemption and forgiveness.

I was pleasantly surprised by Everneath. It ended a bit suddenly, but I can’t wait to see where this series goes. And the cover is absolutely gorgeous! Even more beautiful in person. The people at Harper Collins know what they’re doing. If you’re really into mythology, this should be on your list. While the mythology isn’t blatant (like, Percy-Jackson blatant), it’s a beautiful and romantic twist to the Hades-Persephone myth. So utterly different, but it works. Definitely pick this one up.

Breathless Reads event at Once Upon a Time bookstore: recap

If I've learned anything from last Friday when it took me over 2 hours to drive to a signing, it's to not, under any circumstances, drive far for a signing on Fridays in the middle of the afternoon in LA. Today, I broke that promise. But it was for a good cause. Before the Breathless Reads stop at 7, I drove through horrible traffic and disgusting LA air to Mrs. Nelson's Toy and Book Shop, where I got there for the tail end of the questions for the wonderful debut author Marissa Meyer (you may know her from my infamous Cinder Sunday).

Since I'd already had a blogger friend send me a signed hardback of Cinder, I got my audiobook signed instead!

I also told Marissa about the Breathless Reads signing, and lo and behold, she showed up! She even asked a question, and Beth Revis said that her favorite read so far this year has been Cinder. The blushing was abundant.

These four ladies made it one of the best events I've ever been to. You could tell how much they'd bonded over the trip (I loved how we were the final stop of the tour and could see how wild and crazy all the traveling had made them). The name of the moderator slips my mind, but I believe she was an adult author. Anyways, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a book signing. Beth and Andrea were like best friends/sisters and Beth is simply hilarious! Something about that Southern humor. Basically they all talked about their books and answered some of the mod's questions, and then it was opened up to audience questions. Definitely a night to remember!

My wonderful and understanding boyfriend took this picture and even got me the third spot in the signing line (you wouldn't believe the amount of people in this tiny little Indie store!). Also, as a random side note, not only did Marissa Meyer make an appearance, but so did Tahereh Mafi, author of Shatter Me! I'm going to a signing of hers in April and I think we sealed the dinner plans at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. She lives in California and hasn't had RCW *shakes head*. Oh Tahereh.

For the signing, everyone that wanted books signed had to buy a book, and when you got a book you received this lanyard. I felt so official wearing it around my neck. Every tour should have one of these! There's also a unique code on the back that I can enter and apparently it's for some big contest. Wonder what it is.

I already have the first two signed from a previous event in Oceanside last year with Kiersten White and Stephanie Perkins. It was great seeing Andrea again.

I absolutely LOVED Born Wicked, and Jessica is just so sweet. Her dress was really cute. Such a tiny signature though... *strains eyes on screen* Oh, wait, I have the signed book.

A few months ago, I entered a creative contest on Beth's website, and she sent everyone that entered some swag and this book plate that you see above. I had no idea she would be coming out here, so I slapped it on... and now I can't get it off. She obliged me though by signing around it.

I also got my ARC of Legend signed, which I will be giving away in a different giveaway hop next month. I was glad I was finally able to meet Marie Lu, as I missed her launch party due to my boyfriend's birthday.

I met up with a few fellow bloggers, and was even more surprised by meeting a follower of my blog at the signing. Her name is Ava (I hope I spelled your name right!). She was super sweet and even gave me a Bloodlines tote bag!

Thanks so much Ava! I'm definitely taking this puppy to ALA to fill with books!!

Well, I'm exhausted! Hopefully this post made sense, as I'm delirious and half-awake from all the stupid traffic on the way there. I think if there had been traffic on the way back, I would have run everyone off the road.

Cover Poison: The Unfailing Light, Shadow and Bone, & Defiance

First is the sequel to a 2012 debut novel that I tried requesting on NetGalley but it never went through. Now, looking at this cover, I may just have to buy the first!

PUBLICATION DATE: October 9th (2012)

Having had no choice but to use her power has a necromancer to save Russia from dark forces, Katerina Alexandrovna, Duchess of Oldenburg, now wants to forget that she ever used her special powers. She's about to set off to pursue her lifelong dream of attending medical school when she discovers that Russia's arch nemesis--who she thought she'd destroyed--is still alive. So on imperial orders, Katerina remains at her old finishing school. She'll be safe there, because the empress has cast a potent spell to protect it against the vampires and revenants who are bent on toppling the tsar and using Katerina for their own gains. But to Katerina's horror, the spell unleashes a vengeful ghost within the school, a ghost more dangerous than any creature trying to get in.

I'm surprised this one is coming out so soon after the first! Speaking of which, here's the cover for the first book to ogle at (not nearly as ogle-worthy as the second though).

Next is an equally as beautiful cover, and another awesome-sounding YA book from the people at Harper Collins.

PUBLICATION DATE: August 28th

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses, host dinner parties, and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father’s apprentice, Logan—the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same boy who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city’s top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor’s impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

Finally is the cover for a 2012 debut novel, which I'm pretty sure I have a NetGalley copy of. And Veronica Roth blurbed it, so it must be good!

Shadow and Bone (The Grisha #1) by Leigh Bardugo

PUBLICATION DATE: June 5th

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next.
