Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where you feature an upcoming release that you're highly anticipating.

This week, I'm awaiting the final (I think?) book of one of my favorite series! And that is:

She’s finally letting go of Logan’s violet-hued ghost, but not her search to uncover the truth about her past.As the first in a generation that can see ghosts, Aura is convinced that she has a connection to the Shift. My Winter TBR List: Kindle Edition

No, that is NOT my hand, but I thought it really glorified the kindle...

I have totally been slacking on my NetGalley titles, and for that I truly apologize. There were some very lonely titles on my actual bookshelf as well, so it's hard to please everyone! But since I'll be going on vacation during winter break, I'll be bringing my kindle to cut down on space and weight, and that means that I'll be reading all the wonderful titles I own! Here's the deficit I'm looking at (in no particular order):

Hopefully I can make a good-sized dent in this list! Besides these e-books, I have Blood Red Road, Beautiful Chaos, Birthmarked, and Stork on my regular TBR list. I have truly given myself a challenge!

In My Mailbox (17)

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren, where you create a post of the books you either received in the mail, bought at a bookstore, or borrowed from the library. If you'd like to know my thoughts about IMM, check out the link near the top of my blog called In My Mailbox. Simple, right? Anyway, onto the books!

NOTE: If you're unfamiliar with how I do things with my IMM, I basically give a little back story to the books I have pictured. Also, if there are ARC's, I'll give a synopsis and date published.

BOUGHT

~Crossed (Matched #2) by Ally Condie: This was one of the books at B&N that was on sale 50%, so it was hard to say no. I still have to read the first one, but I knew I couldn't pass up this deal!

~Void by Rhiannon Lassiter: I believe this is a dystopian, and it's been given a new cover and squished into one. It sounds really interesting though, and so I used a 30% off coupon to buy it! I can't wait to start it.

~The Maze Runner series by James Dashner: Another dystopian (I realized that's all I bought, which is ironic considering how I'm just getting into it) world that I've heard great things about. The third book just came out, and they were all 50% off! I'm excited to start this series and just read through it.

FOR REVIEW

~The Clockwork Giant (Chroniker City #1) by Brook Johnson: As I've said before, I'm really warming up to steampunk, so when the author e-mailed me asking to review her book, I wholeheartedly agreed (besides the fact that it was my first author request!). You guys should definitely check it out, it sounds great. I will be reviewing this one.

PUBLICATION DATE: December 13, 2011

It's 1881, the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Chroniker City, the global hub of technological advancement in the modern world. Petra Wade, self-taught clockwork engineer, dreams of one day becoming a member of the Guild, an elite group of inventors and innovators who envision a future fueled by technology, but her ambitions will only come to fruition if she can find a way into the illustrious university—an institution reserved for men only. When she meets Emmerich Goss, an accomplished engineer newly recruited into the Guild, Petra discovers that he needs help building a top-secret, government-sanctioned automaton, and she is just the girl to help him.

Together, they craft the clockwork giant, and as the deadline for its completion nears, Petra finds that she can love more than gears and mainsprings.

~Mesmerize (Mystyx #4) by Artist Author: This series sounds interesting, but I think I'll have to read the other 3 before I delve into this one. I will still be reviewing it though... eventually.

PUBLICATION DATE: January 24th, 2012

You can’t move forward until you deal with the past…

Starting over is nothing new to diplomat’s daughter Lindsey Yi. She’s grown up changing schools the way other girls change clothes. Still, moving to Lincoln, Connecticut, is different. Although she’s still reeling from the loss of her parents in an accident, Lindsey is finally in a place that feels like home. Because here, Lindsey’s ability to read other people’s thoughts doesn’t make her weird. It makes her one of the Mystyx.

When Dylan Murphy—hot, popular and a senior—starts to notice her, things get serious, fast. But even as she’s figuring out how she really feels, the Mystyx realize that they’re not the only supernaturals in town. There
are other gifted teens who have different motives. And they are hoping to get close enough to the Mystyx to convert them—and the world—to Darkness…

~New Girl by Paige Harbison: This sounded really interesting to me because I've totally been there being the new girl in school. I will be reviewing this one.

PUBLICATION DATE: January 31st, 2012

They call me 'New Girl'...

Ever since I arrived at exclusive, prestigious Manderly Academy, that’s who I am. New girl. Unknown. But not unnoticed—because of her.

Becca Normandy—that’s the name on everyone’s lips. The girl whose picture I see everywhere. The girl
I can’t compare to. I mean, her going missing is the only reason a spot opened up for me at the academy.
And everyone stares at me like it’s my fault.

Except for Max Holloway—the boy whose name shouldn’t be spoken. At least, not by me. Everyone thinks of him as Becca’s boyfriend…but she’s gone, and here I am, replacing her. I wish it were that easy. Sometimes, when I think of Max, I can imagine how Becca’s life was so much better than mine could ever be.

And maybe she’s still out there, waiting to take it back.

~Allegiance (Legacy #2) by Cayla Kluver: Apparently NetGalley is not liking me right now because it's not sending the e-mail for this one to my kindle, but it'll work eventually. Anyway, I also got the first book from NetGalley, so I guess I'll have to get cracking on this series!

PUBLICATION DATE: February 28th, 2012
Only I saw Narian for who he truly was: a young man with courage and an independent mind, and made to pay for what was outside his control. He couldn't help his past any more than he could help the way those intense, deep-blue eyes pierced me and held me captive.

An eighteen-year-old queen in love with the enemy as their countries pass the point of no return...

Bound to a man she cannot love, Queen Alera of Hytanica must forget Narian, the young man who holds her heart. ~Horizon (Aftertime #3) by Sophie Littlefield: I have yet to read her YA novels, but this series has always sounded interesting to me. Now I just need to read the first two!!

PUBLICATION DATE: January 24th, 2012

Of living things there were few....but they carried on.

But from beneath the devastated California landscape emerges a tendril of hope. A mysterious traveler arrives at New Eden with knowledge of a passageway North—a final escape from the increasingly cunning Beaters. Clutching this dream, Cass and many others decamp and follow him into the unknown.

Journeying down valleys and over barren hills, Cass remains torn between two men. One—her beloved Smoke—is not so innocent as he once was. The other keeps a primal hold on her that feels like Fate itself. And beneath it all, Cass must confront the worst of what’s inside her—dark memories from when she was

FREE FOR KINDLE

~Moonstone (Unhidden Magic #1) by Marilee Brothers: This sounds really interesting and it was on super sale (meaning it was around $10 for the list price, but I got it for free!). I'm not even sure what it's about exactly...

~The Soulkeepers (The Soulkeepers #1) by G.P. Ching: I've always been interested in this one (I also love books with covers that have the guy on them instead of what's supposed to be the main girl in a dress that she never wears. I may be reviewing this one.

WON

~Angel Evolution (Evolution Trilogy #1) by David Estes: I won this from LibraryThing, and it sounds really interesting! I love angels and this cover is pretty amazing! I may be reviewing this one.

Teaser Tuesday (5)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading.

This week, my teaser is from my current faerie/steam-punk/historical-fic novel:

"From her hiding spot Tiki could see him standing under the gas lamp holding the paper out to the light to read the words. Tiki closed her eyes and envisioned what she had scrawled earlier. Leave the bag with the reward at the base of the weeping willow tree. The ring is in Buckingham. When it is safe we will let you know where it is hidden."

Building My Bookshelf (6)

If you want to know more about this meme, please refer to the link ironically labeled Building My Bookshelf. But here's the gist:

This is a meme I've created here at The Reader's Antidote, which was inspired by the meme Dusty Reads from Giselle at .Xpresso Reads and the meme Books to Pine For from Kristi at The Story Siren.

~ Feature two books I have on my shelf but haven't read yet. These have likely gotten noteworthy praise or they just sound like they'd be a great read.

~Feature two books that are on my Wishlist, one that is already released and another that will be released within the next year.

With all the books, I'll give a synopsis, and if they haven't been released then I'll include a publication date.

On my shelf:

There's something about the new guy at Crossroads High…
Most sixteen-year-olds have friends.
Aden Stone has four human souls living inside him:
One can time travel.
One can raise the dead.
One can possess another human.
One can tell the future.
Everyone thinks he's crazy, which is why he's spent his entire life shuffled between mental institutions and juvie. All of that is about to change, however. For months Aden has been having visions of a beautiful girl—a girl who carries centuries-old secrets. A girl who will either save him or destroy him.
Together they'll enter a dark world of intrigue and danger…but not everyone will come out alive.

The undead can really screw up your senior year ...

Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancé. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.

On my wishlist:

 (already published)

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

  PUBLICATION DATE: March 13th, 2012

The voiceover was done by Ed Westwick of Gossip Girl and I wrote it about a year ago. It is supposed to be Will:

When you bury a secret, you cut a hole in your heart and you cover it over

With cruelty

With loneliness

With lies

With whatever will keep it hidden

With whatever will keep it safe.

No matter the cost.

The danger is, if you keep it hidden long enough

When the truth finally comes to light

It will break your heart.

Hope you like!

Book to Movie - Breaking Dawn: Part I

Sitting in the theater with my best friend:
Me: "I can't believe I'm sitting in this theater about to watch Breaking Dawn."
Friend: "I know, me neither. Why am I here again?"
Me: "For the headboard scene."
Friend: "Hell yeah!"

I do believe I have found the key to tolerating the Twilight movies. Come in with extremely low expectations and be pleasantly surprised, go into the theater assuming it's a comedy, and crack jokes when you see Edward breaking the headboard, Bella being her usual awkward self, and when you hear Renesme's name. I think I'll do this review by character/actor. Are you ready?

~Bella: You expect such a young actress to grow into her role, especially through so many movies in the series and with so many people praying she'll get better. If you were hoping for that in this movie, you'll be disappointed. To be fair, some things weren't her fault. These characters are put into some difficult situations, and she actually reacted like any normal teenager would. Yes, I was shocked as well. But it still doesn't take away from Stewart's awkwardness. If you watch some of her other movies though, it's not that she's a bad actress. When she's in her element of playing a young woman with a messed up life, she hits that nail straight on the head. I actually really liked her in Adventureland and Cake Eaters. She just can't play an angst-ridden teenager who wants to be a vampire. She is physically incapable, and therein lies her horrible acting in these movies. She absolutely LOOKS the part of Bella, but can't act a lick of who she really is in the books. My friends say even I can do a better Bella, though that's probably because I look more like her and I'm not awkward as heck! Bella also looked legitimately like a cracked-out anorexic girl when she was pregnant. Good work by the special-effects and makeup teams, because I could truly believe that she was that disgustingly skinny, and as much as it pained me to see her like that, I had to admit it was done well. Although the birthing scene with Bella was awkward and gross and I had to cover my eyes even though I knew what was going to happen, I think the director and screenwriter did the best as he could with that scene. It's a big task to live up to.

~Edward: I was proud. Rob actually showed some emotion in this one. He had reason to, although it would have been nice to see in the other movies as well. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed him. He was the Edward I've been waiting for with these movies. So kudos RPats, you caught me by surprise with how well you did. And again, he's not a horrible actor. I absolutely loved him in Remember Me and I heard he was great in Water For Elephants. Honestly he stepped up a notch in my head, which hopefully won't change in part II. In the book, I kind of fell in love with Edward all over again, and in the movie, I finally got the Edward I'd fallen in love with. NOW I understand why all the girls out there think RPats is the hottest thing since sliced bread.

~Jacob: Lautner is the worst actor of them all! It might have something to do with the fact that I hate Jacob as a character, but honestly Taylor should have just been a stuntman for his movie career. He cannot act. BUT. But, I wasn't completely disgusted by him this time. I also liked Jacob in the book, and he didn't do the worst job. He was the comedic relief during Bella's pregnancy, as he was in the book, and while he was still awkward I think he stepped it up a bit for this one. I still find myself hating him, but that's probably residual literary hate and the fact that Lautner shouldn't have gotten into acting in the first place. And when Jake imprinted, you could totally hear the actual groans in the theater. I just laughed, because really it is quite ridiculous.

~Renee and Charlie: These two were the best! I love the casting for the roles of the parents and Bella's parents did not disappoint. There's a part where Renee and Charlie see all the graduation hats, and all Renee says is, "How creative!" and flounces off to help Bella get ready for the wedding. And even though this part wasn't in the book, a few characters made speeches at the reception, and Charlie talked about how he was a cop and knew how to hunt down people and could easily wield a gun. It was so classic! And there was another line when they give her the jewel comb thing to put in her hair, and Charlie was like, "We got you something old... besides your mother." Honestly, that's some of the best comedic writing this series has ever seen!

~The Cullens: I have always seen Peter Facinelli as one of the best actors in these movies. He plays his part so well, and I was sad that he didn't have much of a role in this one. Alice, while still a tiny bit of an awkward actress, was cuter than ever and how I pictured the Alice from the book would act like. For those of you who have seen it (and watch out for this line if you haven't), wasn't Jasper's best line, "Maybe"?! I mean, seriously, the whole theater cracked up. He moved forward closer to the camera to make it seem like he was going to say something profound, but all he said was that one word. Just... beautiful. Emmett was punching people like a bada$$ as usual, and Rosalie was playing her part as protector of the unborn fetus. To be honest, I was hoping Rose would be more fierce, like she was in the book, but oh well. Again, low expectations is the key.

~The Wolves: There was this one part where they're all in wolf form and literally all they do is snarl for 5 minutes. It's the part where Sam is trying to get Jacob to bow down to him, and Jacob's like, "No you can't kill Bella," and Sam's like, "You will obey," and Jacob's like, "NO!" and then he breaks free and hip checks Sam on the way back to the Cullen's to warn them. My friend looked at me in the theater, and mouthed, "What the [bleep] just happened." She's read the books too and loves them, but neither of us had the answer. There was also a part that was different from the book, but actually it was a better plot point. *SMALL SPOILER* In the book, when Jake goes to meet with some of Sam's wolves to beg them to leave Bella alone, it's more of an emotional thing. And Quin (or someone else, I can't remember) doesn't want to shift and talk to Jacob in human form because it would hurt too much. Yeah, that scene. Well, in the movie, they use the meeting as a diversion instead so that Carlisle, Esme, and Emmett can escape to get more blood for Bella. I think if Meyer had struck a balance between those two plot points, that could have been a great scene. As it were, they're two mediocre scenes instead. *END SPOILER*

As a side note, my friend and I totally called the fact that the movie would end with Bella opening her red vampire eyes to the world. These movies are nothing if not predictable. Also, as much as I don't want to have to wait to see the disaster that will be part II, I'm glad they split it up into two movies. The two halves really are quite different, and the book is so long that they'd ruin it by trying to cram it into one. Even if it was a 4-hour movie, I don't think I could see through more than two hours of the acting. The score was also better than a couple of the past ones. They used some themes from the score of the first Twilight, which I loved, and the music actually made sense for the mood. I wonder if they hired a different composer. Overall, a must-see if you're a Twilight fan, but not a hard core one. I swear the girl next to me gave the most venomous look I have ever received in a movie theater. If looks could kill.

Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy #6) by Richelle Mead: review

Goodreads rating: 4.52
Hardcover, 594 pages
Published December 7th 2010 by Penguin Group (USA)
ISBN: 1595143068 (ISBN13: 9781595143068)
URL
Setting: Pennsylvania (United States)

The astonishing final novel in Richelle Mead's epic series!

Murder. Love. Jealousy. And the ultimate sacrifice. Now, with Rose on trial for her life and Lissa first in line for the Royal Throne, nothing will ever be the same between them.

5/5

What a wonderful ending to heart-pounding, gut-wrenching series. There were so many times that I wanted to put these books down because it was so frustratingly good! If you haven't read this series, you shouldn't be reading this review in the first place. And if that's the case, then go out and buy it. NOW! You won't regret a single penny you spend on this series. I want to leave, breathe, sleep, eat in this series. There are very few books that do that for me.

One thing I really liked about this series is that it wasn't one-dimensional. It's not paranormal vampire nonsense all the time; the characters face addiction and vices and true heartache that any young adult may have the opportunity to relate to. While Mead's writing isn't insanely thought-provoking, she comes up with some of the best jokes to hide Rose's pain. That's what all writers need to realize. Your books are nothing without the dialogue. You can use all fancy wording you want, but your reader needs human interaction. Mead does a fantastic job of this.

I must admit that I was reluctant to start this series. The whole entire series had been sitting on my shelf for half a year, and the first book probably over a year. For me, nothing could compare to Twilight in terms of a vampire book. I tried reading Claudia Gray's Evernight series, and came out liking it, but not loving it. I'd read another stand-alone vampire book called Sunshine by Robin McKinley and again I liked it but wasn't loving it. Then I cracked down and grudgingly read the first Vampire Academy, and immediately fell in love/lust with this series. It's nice to see a heroine that can kick butt, but still have those very girly teenage moments. And of course I'd heard of the hotness that is Dimitri, and he certainly lived up to his reputation. I want this to be a TV series, just to see who they'd cast as these two. They'd have to already have insane chemistry.

In Last Sacrifice, you knew Rose wasn't going to be kept down long, and Dimitri (with a little help from their friends) breaks her out of jail and they go on the run. I can already feel the sexual tension! But she's heartbroken by the fact that newly-returned Dimitri no longer loves her (which we all know is a lie, but Rose is a teenage girl and therefore believes him), and so she stays in a relationship with Adrian. As I said in my review for Spirit Bound, I love Adrian, but no one is more perfect for Rose than Dimitri is. And I mean, come on, they're not not going to get together (yes, I meant not not - silly double negative). And, not only do they have to clear Rose's name, but now Lissa is in the running to be queen!

This book just has so much action and adventure and sweet romance that it was almost too much (in a good way). Not everything ended on a good note (I guess that's why there's a companion series?), but I couldn't have imagined such a heart-wrenching series ending any other way. I can't wait to read Bloodlines now with the stoic Sydney! Should be interesting...

Follow Friday (7)

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

Question: It's Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. so we want to know what you are Thankful for - blogging related of course! Who has helped you out along the way? What books are you thankful for reading?

Well, I already kind of made a blog post about this, but I'll say it again. I'm so thankful for all of my wonderful followers (even if you don't follow via GFC). I appreciate every single one of you and the blogging community is everything I could have ever hoped for. I've met some very sweet people along the way and I can't wait to trudge through the holiday season and the new year with you all. I'm also thankful for fellow book bloggers. The book blogging world wouldn't have been started without you pioneers, and I know that all of you that follow me do it out of the goodness of your heart.

I also appreciate authors, who are the artists behind these amazing books we read, and the publishers who not only give these amazing books a home but also give us bloggers a chance to get the word out about them early. We know ARC's are in high demand now, and it's like Christmas every time we get one! The books, specifically that I'm thankful for are:

~Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling: I wouldn't be as into reading without this series. It also shows how research pays off. A good amount of the words and phrases and places in the books are made up, but their roots come from mythology. The most recent one I found was that the name Fenrir Greyback (emphasis on the first name) was a large dangerous wolf in Norse mythology. Make sense? I literally grew up with this series, and in a way I feel bad for the kids that didn't. I highly doubt I'd be as avid a reader as I am now.

~Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer: Reading this series made me realize that I wanted to write in the YA paranormal romance genre. I had been toying with the idea of a middle grade book for a long time, but it never seemed to fit. The novel I've finished is YA and not the middle grade one (which is one I'm going to have to fine-tune), and I know that reading this series not only sparked my interest in reading anything YA, but also to write for such an amazing genre.

~The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare: My writing wouldn't be nearly as good if not for Clare's writing and this amazing series. When I'm stuck on a part, I read her books and find myself immersed in her self-coveted writing style. This also really got me back into YA, possibly even more than Twilight. At the time, I figured if all YA books were this good, then I'd have to keep reading this genre to find out. Sadly, nothing has quite met its standards. Without this series, though, I'm not sure how far I'd be into finishing my books to be honest.

I am forever indebted to every one of these authors. They have inspired me and so many others in ways they can't even imagine.

Cover Poison: Never to Sleep by Rachel Vincent

Never to Sleep is a novella in the Soul Screamer's series by Rachel Vincent. And who's the narrator? Sophie! But you don't really care, you just want the cover:

Ain't it perty! Oh, and here's the synopsis:

Not after all the work she’s put into cultivating the right look, and friends, and reputation. But then Sophie sees something so frightening she lets out a blood-curdling scream—and finds herself stuck in a bizarre parallel world where nothing is safe and deadly creatures lurk just out of sight, waiting for her to close her eyes and sleep…forever.

Sounds pretty awesome! If I'm reading right, this will be available for free on Rachel Vincent's website on January 1st, so mark your calendars!

Blood Promise and Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy #4, 5) by Richelle Mead: review

BLOOD PROMISE
Goodreads rating: 4.44
Hardcover, 503 pages
Published August 25th 2009 by Razorbill
ISBN: 1595141987 (ISBN13: 9781595141989)
Setting: Montana (United States), Russia
Rose Hathaway's life will never be the same.

The recent attack on St. Vladimir's Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose's neck, a mark that says she's killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters . . . Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life's vow to protect Lissa—her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess—or, dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She'll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?

Now, with everything at stake—and worlds away from St. Vladimir's and her unguarded, vulnerable, and newly rebellious best friend—can Rose find the strength to destroy Dimitri? Or, will she sacrifice herself for a chance at eternal love?

SPIRIT BOUND
Goodreads rating: 4.49

Salvation has its price.
The words stunned Adrian for a moment, but he kept going. "You're lying. What you're describing is impossible. There's no way to save a Strigoi. When they're gone, they're gone. They're dead. Undead. Forever."

Robert's next words weren't directed at Adrian. They were spoken to me. "That which is dead doesn't always stay dead...."

After a long and heartbreaking journey to Dimitri’s birthplace in Siberia, Rose Hathaway has finally returned to St. Vladimir’s—and to her best friend, Lissa Dragomir. It's graduation, and the girls can’t wait for their real lives outside of the Academy’s cold iron gates to finally begin. But even with the intrigue and excitement of court life looming, Rose’s heart still aches for Dimitri. He's out there, somewhere.

She failed to kill him when she had the chance, and now her worst fears are about to come true. Dimitri has tasted her blood, and she knows in her heart that he is hunting her. And if Rose won't join him, he won't rest until he's silenced her...forever.

But Rose can't forget what she learned on her journey—whispers of a magic too impossible and terrifying to comprehend. A magic inextricably tied to Lissa that could hold the answer to all of Rose's prayers, but not without devastating consequences. Now Rose will have to decide what—and who—matters most to her. In the end, is true love really worth the price?

Fall in love with Rose and Dimitri all over again in Spirit Bound, the eagerly awaited fifth novel in Richelle Mead's enthralling Vampire Academy series.

5/5

This series is honestly giving me miniature panic attacks! I know that's unhealthy but I can't stop. It's just that good. I have experienced more heartache with this series than I ever did with Twilight or The Mortal Instruments (although The Infernal Devices may be giving this series a run for it's money in that department).
There's such a difference between the way these two start off. There's so much that changes so rapidly, but Mead spells it all out for you. I love/hate how the books get longer as the series progresses. To be honest, I've been flipping to pages past my reading areas (no, NOT the ending... that's just wrong), looking for some sign of hope in the darkness that has become this series. Blood Promise has barely nothing of that hope. I love re-reading series that are my favorite, but honestly, I think I'd skip this one for the simple fact that my heart would break for Rose all over again. Seriously, she needs a hug.

In Spirit Bound, I'm not sure how I feel about Adrian. He's a good guy, but we all know he's not meant for Rose. Only Dimitri is meant for Rose. But he's a Strigoi. Or... is he? I knew the author couldn't drag on the whole Dimitri-is-a-bad-vampire thing through Last Sacrifice, but I was still surprised by how it all went down. Lissa is finding ways to keep things from Rose, and to be honest I'm proud of her. Without Lissa, Dimitri would have remained Strigoi. It's so hard not to be cryptic in these kind of reviews. If you've read the books, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, well, you shouldn't be reading my review of the 4th and 5th book unless these two are next on your list.

I want to say more. I SOOOOO want to say more! But I can't ruin it. If you read my review of Last Sacrifice (which I'm still reading), then I'll share my thoughts more on how Spirit Bound ended, because seriously, it's killing me that I can't tell you! Pick up this series. It will make you feel anxious and have the urge to throw it across the room, but in the best possible way!

Waiting on Wednesday (7)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where you feature an upcoming release that you're highly anticipating.

This week, my WOW is a book that I've been desperately trying to get an early copy of (although I think I may have an answer to that, thanks to a fellow blogger!!), but after interviewing the author, I've been dying for it! It is:

PUBLICATION DATE: January 17th, 2012

For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

Described by Richelle Mead as “utterly captivating,” Unearthly received outstanding reviews, garnered accolades from New York Times bestselling authors, and was named an Indie Next Pick. In this heart-wrenching sequel, Cynthia Hand expertly captures the all-consuming joy of first love—and the agony of loss. This beautifully woven tale will appeal to fans of Lauren Kate, Becca Fitzpatrick, and Aprilynne Pike.

What are you waiting on?

In My Mailbox (16)

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren, where you create a post of the books you either received in the mail, bought at a bookstore, or borrowed from the library. If you'd like to know my thoughts about IMM, check out the link near the top of my blog called In My Mailbox. Simple, right? Anyway, onto the books!

NOTE: If you're unfamiliar with how I do things with my IMM, I basically give a little back story to the books I have pictured. Also, if there are ARC's, I'll give a synopsis and date published.

BOUGHT

~Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi: I've already read this one (thanks to HarperCollins for an advanced copy!), but I knew I needed to spend money on this amazing book. You can find my review here. Also, I went to Tahereh's launch party on Wednesday!! I had my ARC signed and this final copy. She is so sweet and amazing.

~Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales by The Brother's Grimm: I bought this at Costco, because every author should have a copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales. There's just no way around it. Besides it's leather-bound and will look real perty on my shelf!

FOR REVIEW (NetGalley)

~Touch of Power (Healer #1) by Maria V. Snyder: This sounds very interesting! I have four (yes four) of Snyder's books, but I haven't read any of them. Maybe I'll get started with this one. I will be reviewing this one.

~dancergirl (WiHi Series #1) by Carol M. Tanzman: I was debating whether to request this one, but I decided why not? I've heard good things about it, so I thought I'd give it a try. I will be reviewing this one.

~On a Dark Wing by Jordan Dane: I have In the Arms of Stone Angels on my shelf, so I was excited when I was auto-approved by Harlequin Teen (thank you!!) and was able to get this one right away. I will be reviewing this one.

WON

~Swirls (Outsiders #1) by F. A. Hershey: I won this ebook on LibraryThing, and it sounds interesting. And that cover is amazing!! I will likely be reviewing this one.

FREE FOR KINDLE

~A Moonlit Night (A Moonlit Night #1) by Adrianna White: Who doesn't love a free book? And I like the cover as well. Very provocative!

~Starcrossed: Perigree (Starcrossed #1) by Tracey Lee Campbell: If you read the synopsis, this sounds very interesting. And I really like the cover. Definitely excited to read this one.

~Warriors of the Cross (The Warrior Series #1) by T. R. Graves: This one has always interested me, and I believe I got it free from Smashwords from a special being held by the author. It sounds really good and I can't wait to read it.

~Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1) and City of Glass (Mortal Instruments #3) by Cassandra Clare (Unabridged Audiobooks): Amazon has this special deal going on where if you sign up for a 30-day trial membership for their audio site, you get two free audio books, and I've always wanted to listen to these two on audio in particular. This will be my first experience with audio, so I'm pretty excited!

Teaser Tuesday (4)

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading.

Again, so behind on this one, but hopefully you'll like it. I've been reading the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead (and believe me, I'm skeptic about vampire books after the awesomeness that is Twilight) but I am absolutely in love with this series. Though I'm glad I waited until they were all out before I read them. Waiting for Blood Promise would have been torture!! My teaser though is from the next book:

There's a big difference between death threats and love letters--even if the person writing the death threats still claims to actually love you. Of course, considering I once tried to kill someone I loved, maybe I had no right to judge.

The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins: review

The Hunger Games - Goodreads rating: 4.54
Catching Fire - Goodreads rating: 4.39
Mockingjay - Goddreads rating: 4.07
FROM THE FIRST BOOK:

Hardcover, 374 pages
Published December 14th 2009 by Scholastic, Inc. (first published September 14th 2008)
ISBN: 0439023483 (ISBN13: 9780439023481)

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

 4/5

That rating is for the whole series. I've wrapped all my reviews of this series into one. I admit it's selfish and a bit lazy, but at least you were notified. What can I say? This series was truly all it was cracked up to be. It'd been sitting on my bookshelf for months, and I knew eventually I'd have to take a chance and read it.

I really enjoyed Hunger Games. I've heard it was sort of the start of all this dystopian melarchy in YA, and I can see why. The world is crafted with careful and precise hands, and the plot of the first book was simply flawless. Except for the whole corrupt society rebellion thing, this could have easily been shortened to a two-book series. I enjoyed Katniss and Gale and especially Peeta, and even Haymitch. As I said before, I was expecting no romance because I had read as much in other reviews, but in the later books it almost became all about the romance, not that I'm complaining. I must admit, I was on Peeta’s side the whole time. You could tell how much he loved her; much more than Gale ever could. And that's giving nothing away.

The second book, Catching Fire, got a little dicey for me because they had to go back into the games and only one victor would be decided this time. It turned out...interesting...in the end, but I just didn't feel like it met with my expectations of the first one.

And finally Mockingjay, the last book, was good...up until the ending. I'm really tempted to rant now, but I don't want to spoil it for you. Still, overall, it was an enjoyable, action-packed, heart wrenching series that I won't soon forget. No series can ever live up to it as a near-pioneer of dystopian YA.
