If I Die (Soul Screamers #5) by Rachel Vincent: review

The entire school's talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee's no ordinary high-school junior. She's a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it's a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee's going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend's needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren't quite human, either.

But Kaylee's borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

4.5/5

I had a love-hate relationship with this book before I even started it. I love the Soul Screamer's series (it's highly underrated), but I kept seeing little one-line reviews that ended up saying too much. So I won't be telling you what they said, as I'm sure you'll find out anyway if you scroll down the other reviews. Let's just say I was Team Nash before this book started, now, I'm not so sure.

Kaylee is just starting to trust Nash after he pawned off her memories to get high off of some demon dust. I thought it was going pretty well. Sabine, Nash's ex-girlfriend who's hellbent on getting him back from Kaylee. What throws it all out of proportion is that Tod finds out that Kaylee is going to die in 6 days. Yeah, that messes things up a little.

On top of Kaylee's impending demise, there's an incubus staking out the high school and impersonating her very hot math teacher. Too bad he's already gotten at least 2 girls in the area pregnant. And one's in an insane asylum because of it. The same one Kaylee went to before she found out she was a bean sidhe.

At this point, I'm not sure how things got so crazy. I mean, I do, because Kaylee had such a short time to live and how would you react? But Kaylee realized that maybe her and Nash really couldn't work, and that maybe him and Sabine would be better matched. And maybe, just maybe, there was someone that Kaylee cared even stronger for. And I must say, after the idea was knocked into our heads about a thousand times, I realized maybe Rachel Vincent was right. Maybe he was better for her. Maybe Sabine is better for Nash, especially since he started using again.

And the ending. God, the ending! You'll never guess how Kaylee gets out of this one. Where can this series go from here? I guess we'll find out next year.
